George Gershwin (June 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. His compositions include the orchestral work Rhapsody in Blue, the opera Porgy and Bess, the opera An American in Paris, the opera Lady Be Good, and other music for concert hall or musical theatre. He was a respected lyricist, but only one of his songs were successful enough to have become well known among the general public. "Embraceable You" reached number two on the pop charts in 1940.
