Gareth Roberts is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. He has taught creative writing at universities in London and Manchester, and has also worked as a film and television script editor. The books that he wrote for charity were inspired by his own experiences at a mental health hospital and provided him with an insight into life at the unit, where one of the staff was suffering from severe depression. The result was Death in Mind: The Story of a Suicide, which was shortlisted for the Costa Book Award in 2005 and was subsequently adapted for television (BBC One) by the team behind Casualty (BBC)
