Fritz Todt was one of the best-known designers of the German "panzer" tanks of World War II. Born in 1898, Todt was an automobile mechanic before the war who learned to operate heavy artillery during his service with the Austrian army. After Germany's defeat in May 1945, he was accused of being a war criminal by the Allies, tried by an American military tribunal, and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. He was released in 1952 on condition that he leave Germany
He moved to France, where he ran a design office until 1954. He died in 1990.
