Born in Vienna on July 4, 1904, Perls studied medicine at the Universities of Vienna, Berlin, and Zurich. In 1933, he emigrated to the United States, where he specialized in psychiatry at New York University's Bellevue Hospital. He was forced to leave the United States in 1941 after being named by the US State Department as an unacceptable alien. He lived in Europe until 1948 when he immigrated to the United States where he became a citizen in 1958
Perls died in July 1970, at his home in New Jersey.
