Fred Hoyle, astronomer and mathematician, was born in South Kensington, England. He first became interested in astronomy as a teenager, becoming first president of the University Amateur Astronomers Association on his 18th birthday. He went on to obtain a degree in mathematics at Cambridge University and was awarded a PhD for work on quantum electrodynamics. He has written over 200 scientific papers and two books: The Intelligent Universe (1986) and Relativity: The Special and General Theory (1987), which both received the Royal Society of London Prize for Science Books
His most recent book is Black Holes and Time Warps (1994).
