British literary critic, essayist, novelist, literary historian, and literary theorist. His work includes books on Shakespeare, Pope, Donne, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Coleridge, Hardy, Yeats and Auden. He is perhaps best known for his biographical studies of Proust and Joyce. He studied at Oxford University under F. R. Leavis.
He was Professor of English Literature at the University of Reading from 1948 to 1978 when he retired to live in Hampshire. He died in 2001.
