Ernie Pyle was one of the most widely known and respected war correspondents in the United States during World War II. His syndicated column, "From The Battlefields," which ran in more than 150 newspapers, was read by millions every week. Pyle wrote for The Stars and Stripes and other newspapers during his thirteen months in the Pacific theater. He was killed on Ie Shima on April 18, 1945.
