Eric Newby is an English mountaineer, author and broadcaster. He has climbed in many of the world's great mountains, including the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro. His book A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush (1975) was filmed by Peter Weir and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Newby has also written The Last Great Places (1990) and Other People's Countries (1992).
