E. M. Benton is the author of more than 70 works of fiction, nonfiction, essays, and poetry. The recipient of the PEN/Albrand Award for her short story collection, The Ancient Mariner (1962), she was named "one of America's best" by Ladies' Home Journal
Her novel, The Second Virgin (2006), about a woman whose husband has AIDS, was named "one of the nation's best novels" by Library Journal. She is also the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in Fiction and the Virginia Commission on the Arts Individual Artist Award in Fiction. She lives in Virginia with her husband, Professor John C.
