In 1981 he joined the faculty of the Department of Statistics at Yale University, where he has been a professor since 1984. Tufte is the author of The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, including Envisioning Information, The Visual Display of Data, and The Visual Display of Statistical Information, which have been translated into seven languages and have sold more than a million copies each. He is also the author of Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative; Beyond Graphics; and The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint (with Edward Tse).

He was the recipient of the American Statistical Association's 2002 Award for Excellence in Teaching Statistics and was named an honorary fellow by both the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society in 2008. He is a founder and past president of PSR (Program on Statistics Education), past president of SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction), and past vice president of IS&T (Information Systems and Technology). He was named one of four inaugural Fellows at Harvard's John F.

Kennedy School for Government by President Barack Obama in December 2008.
