Dortha Jackson was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, but spent the first ten years of her life in San Francisco. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She taught high school English in Texas until 1965, when she sold her house and moved to New Mexico to raise her family. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the International League for Human Rights.
