He was a member of the Super Bowl winners in 1974 and 1975, and a five-time Pro Bowl selection. Cargill's best season was 1975 when he recorded 14 interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns. He also had two fumble recoveries and one sack.
In his 12 seasons with the Colts, he recorded 268 interceptions with 20 touchdowns, which ranks fourth among active NFL players for interceptions returned for touchdowns.
