After graduating from high school, he attended the University of North Texas, where he joined the UNT Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Professor Bill Holcombe. David's first musical job came after he graduated from UNT in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. He played with several bands for several years before joining Cat Anderson's band in 1969.

David also played on recordings produced by her brother Cat Anderson for Prestige Records under the supervision of jazz legend Don Ellis. David continued to play until he earned his master's degree in Music Education at UNT in 1973.
