Daniel De Leon, one of the early leaders of the Socialist Labor Party and a member of the National Executive Committee of the Socialist Party, was born in 1881 in New York City. He attended City College, where he was a student of William English Walling and Henry George. In 1913 he joined with Morris Hillquit to edit The New Forum, a socialist magazine which was published until 1923. From 1913 until 1921 he served as editor of The Daily People. During this period De Leon wrote many articles on education for The Daily People, most notably "The Child in School", which is considered one of the best expositions of progressive education.

When Daniel De Leon died in 1944 at the age of seventy-nine, he left behind a body of work that is second to none in scope or quality.
