Cornelius Moore was born in 1806 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1833 Moore published a series of articles about slavery and the slave trade, The Slave Trade of the United States, which brought him to national prominence. He became known as one of the greatest advocates for abolitionism and a leading figure in the movement to create a black republic in the West Indies. In 1843 he became a member of the American Anti-Slavery Society, at that time the largest abolitionist organization in the country
In 1844 he helped found the American Colonization Society, which attempted to send free blacks out of the country. The society believed that African Americans could never achieve equality in America and should be returned to Africa, where they would benefit from European culture and civilization. In his writings he argued that African Americans should emigrate to Haiti or Liberia.
In 1848 Moore wrote The Colored Patriots of 1776, which was a history of black patriot soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
