Born in the Philippines in a family of modest means, C.F. Joyce earned a degree in engineering from the University of Washington and found employment at the Boeing Company. In 1926, he was hired by Sears, Roebuck and Company to work on a new aircraft design for the company. At age 22, he established his own aerodynamics consulting firm (C.F. Joyce & Associates) to help aircraft manufacturers develop better designs. After many years of research and development, he invented the variable-pitch propeller which allowed airplanes to take off more efficiently and fly faster.
Joyce's research laid the groundwork for jet engines which are still used today, even though the second world war ended his aviation career for good.
