Buchi Emecheta is a Nigerian novelist and short story writer. She has published six novels, one for young adults, and seven short story collections. Among her many awards, she won the Commonwealth Writers Prize (sponsored by the British Arts Council) for her novel The Bride Price (1978). Emecheta was awarded a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant in 1986.
