Beryl Pfizer’s work in the field of literary and artistic history, and in particular her work on women, children, disability, and war has earned her a reputation as one of the foremost authorities on Victorian culture. Her books include the acclaimed histories of women’s literature, 1810-1840: A Literary History of the First Forty Years of Women's Writing in English (1981) and Victorian Women Writers (1985), as well as The Family Album: Visual Culture in Britain, 1840-1940 (1989), The Other Victorians: A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-Victorian Society (1997) and Subversive Loves: Love Stories from the Victorian Underworld (2005). She was Professor of English Literature at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford University from 2000 to 2011.
