Benjamin Franklin Wade was born in 1839. He served as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. To support his family during the war, he opened a school to teach young boys how to read and write, and later founded the State Normal School (later known as Southwestern University) in Georgetown. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1877 where he served until his death in 1900.
