Barbara Mikulski is a United States Senator from Maryland. She was elected to the seat in 1986, and reelected in 1992. She is the first woman elected to both houses of the Maryland General Assembly and to fill a U.S. Senate seat; in addition, she is the first woman in history to be elected to both houses of the Maryland General Assembly and to serve in both houses of Congress
A Democrat, she served as Mayor of Baltimore (1978–1986) and as Maryland State Senator (1983–1986).
