Arthur Laurents was born in New York City on March 26, 1926, the son of actors Ida Lupino and Irving Caesar. He attended prep school in Dewittville, Tennessee, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee. His first play, "The Band Wagon," was produced by his father.
