A Greek historian of the 2nd century BC, Arrian was born in Nicomedia (modern Izmit, Turkey). After studying under the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, Arrian became a tutor to Alexander the Great's son, Alexander IV. He later wrote the "Anabasis", a history of Alexander's campaign against Darius III of Persia.
