Anne began writing at a time when few women were writing and she had no idea how her work would be received. She published her first book, Agnes Grey, as a series of letters to her sister as a young woman. When it appeared in 1847, critics were harsh and the book's sales were disappointing.

It went unnoticed for many years and was rediscovered by scholars in the 20th century.Anne died in 1849 at the age of 40 and her last book, The Professor, was published posthumously after she had been dead for four years.
