Anna Politkovskaya was born in Moscow in 1958. She studied law and journalism and worked as a reporter for the Moscow News and as a correspondent for the weekly and monthly journals Argumenty i fakty and Literaturnaya Gazeta. In 1993 she received a degree from the Higher School of Economics. She wrote extensively on Chechnya and the conflict with the North Caucasus, most notably her award-winning "Gagarin's Gamble" (2001), an investigation of Russia's involvement in Chechnya.
