Alfred Wegener was born in Altona, Germany on February 11, 1880. He began building glacial models as a child and studied animal magnetism with Franz Deuter at the University of Berlin. After his dissertation was rejected, he moved to Munich, where he quickly became involved in geology. He was awarded his doctorate in 1908 by the University of Heidelberg for his work on the Tertiary deposits of the Alps
From 1909 to 1915, Wegener worked on palaeozoic paleomagnetism and strata correlation in the Alps. His theory that the continents were once connected was not accepted by other geologists until after his death.
