Alexei Navalny, a Russian lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner, was found guilty of embezzlement on 25 August 2018. He was sentenced to five years in prison, but this sentence was changed by the Supreme Court of Russia to a suspended sentence of 3.5 years. On 7 January 2019, he was released from custody after serving 15 days of his sentence. The ruling stated that the detention was unlawful because it was imposed solely for the purpose of preventing him from exercising his right to freedom of expression and assembly in violation of Article 11 (right to freedom of expression). On 14 January 2019, the Russian authorities upheld the decision and rejected the ECHR’s ruling.
