John's University in New York to study theater. He was drafted into the United States Army during World War II and served as a Second Lieutenant until the war ended. Spelling worked as an administrator for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in Europe after his discharge from the army until 1949 when he began his career as a writer for radio programs.

His first television show was "Campbell Playhouse", which premiered on NBC on June 30, 1950. In 1954, he had his own television series called "The Spelling Show" which ran on ABC from 1954 to 1956. In 1955, he created his own production company called Aaron Spelling Productions which produced several shows including "77 Sunset Strip", "Fireside Theater", "Love of Life", and "The Mod Squad." After a brief stint on television with his former "Fireside Theater" co-star William Talman, Spelling went back to producing films with a small budget for Universal Studios.

His best-known films include: "Hollywood Canteen", "The Greatest American Hero", "The Love Boat", and the TV series of the same name that he also co-wrote for Disney from 1977 to 1986. In 1988, Aaron Spelling Productions became part of Paramount Pictures where it still remains one of the largest film production companies in Hollywood today under the direction of Brad Grey and Rob Friedman. He is also the founder of The Western Reserve Historical Society and The Aaron Spelling Center at Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio.
