During the 18th century, they began producing ceramics on a large scale and became known as the Friesche Molen (Dutch Mill). In 1815, a cousin of Abraham de Vries, Dirk Poelenburg, took over production of this Friesian pottery from his cousin. In 1835, he changed the name of his company from “Keramische Fabriek Poelenburg” to “De Poelenburgh Keramiekwarenfabriek” – later shortened to "De Poelenburgh".
This pottery was known for its black glazed earthenware – it was very popular in England.
In 1840, De Poelenburgh became one of the largest producers of porcelain in Europe. In 1850, he moved his factory from Haarlem to Amsterdam. In 1855, he started making porcelain with bone china patterns from England.
He also began experimenting with porcelain glazes containing metallic oxides such as cobalt blue and copper red – a trend that would later lead to his most famous product: Delft Blue Pottery.
In 1890, Jean Baptiste Auguste Delacroix took over ownership of De Poelenburgh from his father after serving as general manager for three years. He modernized the factory by installing new machines that were more efficient than those used by his father for making earthenware.
Delacroix also built Dutch ovens for use in production that resembled English models but had larger capacity than their English counterparts. He continued to use traditional techniques such as firing at high temperatures which increased the durability of pots made at De Poelenburgh compared to those produced by other manufacturers at the time.
