Henry James is considered one of the greatest American novelists, and some of his most famous works are The Turn of the Screw, The Portrait of a Lady, and Washington Square. He was also one of the earliest American novelist’s to write in the English language. James had a career in journalism before becoming an author, working for several different newspapers in New York City before starting out on his own in journalism in 1853. He published two novels in 1864 and 1874, before writing several short stories and novellas throughout the course of his career.
