Ancient Greece used a form of chronological reckoning called a lunar calendar. In this system, months were named after the moon, and the year was named after the month of its occurrence. Lunar calendars were used until about 1000 CE, when they were replaced by solar calendars that use the position of the sun to determine time.
This system is still used today.
