About This Quote

Punctuation, is? fun! If you have ever been to a Japanese sushi bar, you know that the Japanese use a lot of characters in their sentences. The Japanese use some of these characters for their whole sentences, as if their words were punctuated with exclamation points. In English, we also use a lot of punctuation. But, we don’t use all of these characters for every single sentence.

Instead, we use a few of them for short phrases and a few of them for longer ones. Sometimes these punctuation marks are used to make a sentence funny or sarcastic or ironic or to create emphasis or change the tone of the sentence. For example, someone might say “A great day!” but then add “The weather was awful!” We can also use punctuation to create meaning that doesn’t exist in the original sentence.

In that case, we might say “A great day? The weather was awful!” This is an example of using quotation marks in place of another word altogether.
