The modern fairy tale is much different but still follows the same theme. The story usually begins with the immortal being beaten down by mortal humans and forced to work for them, at which point he regains his god-like powers. He is then corrupted by power, losing his soul. The ending then has him regain his soul or come to learn that he never truly had one in the first place. The irony lies in that once you start down this path, it’s hard to go back.
