About This Quote

This quote is one of the most famous quotes of all lore. The singer, William Shakespeare, wrote it in his play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The play takes place on the same day as the wedding of Titania (the fairy queen) and Bottom (her servant). It is an action-packed play that includes many of Shakespeare's best known characters. A large part of the play revolves around Titania's desire to have a singing bird to represent her kingdom. The birds from Titania's kingdom sing every night to entertain her and her loved ones.

She promises a singing lark to anyone who captures a lark for her. In order to lure the bird into her grasp, Titania disguises herself as a shepherdess and tricks Bottom into going to sleep under a tree near a singing lark. He falls asleep and does not wake until Titania comes along and steals the lark from under his nose. There has been much debate about who stole the lark from Bottom's nose.

Some say Titania stole the lark from under his nose. Others say that it was Bottom himself who stole the lark from his own nose! The point is that everyone is trying to steal something from someone else. They are stealing their friends from them, their loved ones from them or even their dreams or ambitions from them!
