Jacob Grimm was a German philologist and collector of folk tales. He and his brother Wilhelm published a collection of German folklore, known as Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales), in 1812, which has since been translated into more than 80 languages. The Grimms' collections were not intended as histories but as collections of German tales for use as entertainment. Grimm's own role in the development of folklore studies was so significant that he was sometimes called the "father of the discipline".
