About This Quote

In Greek mythology, the god Hermes was said to have been transformed from a mortal into a winged messenger of the gods. The story goes that his mother, the goddess Maia, was carrying her son when she suddenly found herself in sudden danger. Rather than put him down to run for safety, she placed the baby in a basket and flung it over a cliff. His basket landed on a rock and remained intact, while Maia fell into the sea.

In that moment he became immortal and gifted with wings. The change from mortal to immortal was what gave him great beauty. We all have our own metamorphosis in life.

We may not be immortalized by losing our lives to an accident or by being thrown over a cliff, but we do find ourselves changed through a variety of circumstances. Sometimes it’s a change for the better, but sometimes it’s a change for worse. Through those changes we find ourselves forever changed and forever beautiful.
