About This Quote

In case you don’t know what the UK’s vote to leave the EU is called, it’s called Brexit. It means “British Exit,” but it’s also a portmanteau word for “Britain Exit.” And, when people say Brexit, they usually mean this thing called BREXIT. It was founded in 2009 by Nigel Farage, who said it stood for “Britain Out.” But he soon realized that people understood it to mean Britain Exit. So then he pronounced the letter X and said that it stood for “Ex-CITment,” or “Ex-Citment.” Then he realized that people didn’t quite get that either. Instead of saying Brexit, he started calling it BREXIT and everything was fine.
