I am free. I am ransomed. I've never felt this way before, like a slave set free who was born a slave and never knew what freedom was like.

About This Quote

In 1883, a man named Frederick Douglass wrote a letter to his old master. In the letter, he tells his master that he is free and that he has never felt this way before. He wrote, “I have never been able to look my master in the face. I have been a slave for thirty-two years, and have done a great many things for which I am ashamed…how long I shall be kept in slavery I don't know.” Douglass then went on to describe how different he felt now that he was free. For the first time in his life, he felt as though he were truly free and ransomed from slavery.
