She had thought she knew what war was, but as their empty eyes and too-thin bodies etched themselves onto her soul, Vhalla realized she knew nothing at all. They were all boys and girls playing at war, writing their own songs the bards would sing. But the bards never sang about this. Suddenly the faces of the people she had killed came back to her. We are monsters. Elise Kova
About This Quote

The poem by Audre Lorde is about an incident in which Audre Lorde and some of her female friends in the Village of Jones, Georgia, were having a discussion in a schoolroom in an African American-owned school when a group of white militia members entered the building and ordered the women to leave. Audre Lorde and her friends complied and left the school. As they were leaving, Audre Lorde noticed that one of the militia members had a small child with him. Audre Lorde was surprised to see that there were children present that had been involved in the incident that started the confrontation.

The militia member’s child was crying and asking questions about what had happened. Audre Lorde later wrote: "It was a child's face, a four year old child, a little girl whose eyes were big with fear and confusion."
