About This Quote

A quote from a famous African-American writer and poet, a man named Langston Hughes, who wrote a poem called “The Ballad of the Landlord.” In this poem he writes about a black man who is beaten on the street by white men and then gets up and starts to fight them again. The landowner points out that he has already killed his son, but the landowner says, “You can blow the world to pieces, but you can't blow the world to peace.” This one is a bit of a stretch, but the author is making an important point. He suggests that no matter how bad things get, a person cannot just blow things up and destroy everyone in sight. It's impossible to destroy everyone because there are too many people involved. The only thing that will come of it is more fighting.
