Mankind has uncovered two extremely efficient theories: one that describes our universe's structure (Einstein's gravity: the theory of general relativity), and one that describes everything our universe contains (quantum field theory), and these two theories won't talk to each other.

About This Quote

The concept of the theory of relativity is that time and space are not absolute. They are relative. Matter is just a collection of matter that is being held together by the strength of gravity. Time doesn't exist. But, if you understand quantum field theory, then this just isn't true.

The relationship between matter and time has been found, and it's very simple. That is, time is really just a relative number related to the amount of energy being applied to an object. If you want to be super-duper-clear about this, I recommend reading his book "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking, but the basic idea is that time only exists in relation to the speed of light.
