About This Quote

In this quote from the movie, "The Shawshank Redemption," a prisoner named Andy Dufresne is being interviewed by a prison guard. One of the things he is asked is what he intends to do with the rest of his life. He says he plans to drink, which gets a laugh from the guard. Then he says, "More Scotch, please." The guard doesn't know what to make of that answer.

Andy's answer isn't funny at all. In fact, alcoholics often find it difficult to find work because they can't stop drinking even if they wanted to. For instance, an alcoholic who has been drinking every day for 30 years may still be considered legally intoxicated when he shows up for a new job interview and tests positive for alcohol.

There are many other ways that alcoholics fall short in the world. They fail to show up for work or school or appointments even when they say they will or their families suffer at their hands.
