About This Quote

“Instead of making prisoners out of our students, we ought to make students out of our prisoners.” –John Dewey This quote speaks to the fact that students are often made out of prisoners. They have been conditioned to conform to the world, and their very nature has been defeated by a life sentence in a cage. In this quote, Dewey is encouraging educators to see the potential in every student, every day. For those who have the strength and will to be free, there is freedom waiting beyond the bars. The best way I've found to become a better writer is to develop a habit of reading books.

Reading fiction is a great way to learn about writing because you can see how a writer uses a specific technique or style in order to bring an idea from the imagination into reality. But reading fiction isn't enough for me anymore now that I've been writing comics for several years now. I'm now more interested in finding other forms of media that will help me improve as a writer. One form of media I'm really enjoying for this purpose is screenwriting.

It's easier than reading novels because you can find simple examples of successful screenplays online and then follow those examples to create your own script. Here's my first attempt at a screenplay: The Dark Knight: A Superhero Story The Dark Knight: A Superhero Story was written by men who had no idea what they were talking about when it came to writing the Dark Knight storyline, so I'm going to analyze this script and explain why it sucks so much! The first thing I noticed about this screenplay was that it's way too long. Screenplays should hold your interest until the very last page but this one dragged on for over 1 hour and 20 minutes! That's almost as long as The Wizard Of Oz (the movie that inspired The Dark Knight) and it ends on an action sequence which has only two pages devoted to it! There's no way anyone could take 1 hour and 20 minutes to read even 1/10th as long as this screenplay! That brings us back to our first point: Every page should contribute something interesting or important or unique or interesting-ish like something mentioned above or something like "Barry Allen (a cop) comes home after work and tells his wife (who's sitting on his couch) about his day." Instead, every page gives off some kind of dull emotion like "Barry Allen goes home after work." "Barry Allen
