About This Quote

In the book of Job, we find a story that is at odds with the expectations of most people. In this story, God confronts Satan directly and asks him why he is bothering to challenge the sovereign power of God. Satan responds by saying that God has not created a world in which our lives can be easy and without suffering. He says, "No man liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself." Satan says that God has not created a world in which our lives will be easy or without suffering.

He says that we will all die one day; we will all suffer; and we will all lose our loved ones. We might say that he is judging us by normal standards of human affairs, but if we do not understand what it means to live according to human standards, we will never understand why we suffer and why we die. Job was not only suffering; he was also dying. He had lost everything: his friends and family; his health and vitality; and even his possessions and his fortune. But Job knew that if he accepted his fate— if he accepted that this was "the will of the Lord," then he would be rewarded when his suffering finally ended.
