This quote is a warning and a curse. It tells the story of Demophoon and his sister, Callisto. Demophoon was born with black wings and was destined to grow into an immortal god. His mother, Callisto, was gifted with white wings and was destined to be his mortal mother.
Demophoon burned in the cave of Ares all day and died when he touched the fire. When Callisto fell in love with her mortal husband, she fled to Athens where she bore two sons: Hephasteus and Ereuthalion. She saved them from death by holding them above the sea while they were delivered by Zeus and Bacchus (Greece and Rome, respectively).
She sacrificed one son because he was mortal and could die; she sacrificed the other son because he was immortal and could never die.
