Stay with me to-night; you must see me die. I have long had the taste of death on my tongue, I smell death, and who will stand by my Constanze, if you do not stay?

About This Quote

"Stay with me to-night; you must see me die. I have long had the taste of death on my tongue, I smell death, and who will stand by my Constanze, if you do not stay?"  - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) When Mozart was only 24 years old his wife Constanze died of breast cancer. Mozart was in great distress which is why he wrote this letter in her honor.  This letter reveals the depth of his love for Constanze especially when he says that he would rather die than live without her.

He had already prepared a place for her in his heart and it wasn’t just a place but an actual room where he would be able to go for comfort for the rest of his life.  Even though Mozart did not live to see his beloved Constanze again, she always remained with him even in death.
