I think now that this is the great division between people. There are people who find life hard and those who find it easy. There are those who have a natural, in-built, expectation of happiness, and there are those who feel that happiness is not to be expected: that it is not, in fact, one of the rights of man. Nor, God knows, one of the rights of women. Hilary Mantel
About This Quote

Up to this point in the movie, all of the central characters have been male. Now, however, we see that this is not the case. At the beginning of the film, when the characters are trying to escape from their cage, there is a female character named Penny (played by Emily Watson). She states that happiness is not to be expected and that it is not one of the rights of man.

This comment draws attention to the idea that woman may not deserve happiness. It is unfortunate that our society has placed these expectations on women and the ideas of what they deserve.
