About This Quote

The quote attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Zeno of Elea is widely accepted to be one of the most widely quoted, yet misattributed, statements in history. It is most often cited as "Things difficult - almost to impossibility - can always be accomplished." But the attribution is incorrect. No contemporary scholar of Ancient Greek philosophy attributes it to Zeno. Further, there are no known instances of this saying before the 19th century.

So who first said it and when? The earliest known citation of this saying is found in a French publication by Alexandre Dumas (1824-1895), whose father had been killed in a duel at which he was defending his honor. The elder Dumas wrote: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” This attribution is cited as fact by many online sources but is actually the statement made by Dumas’ father.
