And I'll dance with you in Vienna, I'll be wearing a river's disguise. The hyacinth wild on my shouldermy mouth on the dew of your thighs. And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook, with the photographs there and the moss. And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty, my cheap violin and my cross. Leonard Cohen
About This Quote

The poet Kyo Anzai wrote this poem after meeting a young woman who was beautiful and slightly mad. She had a very young face and was said to be possessed by the devil. The words of this poem wistfully express the poet’s feelings as he tries to understand what she means. The music of the poem makes it sound like he is playing his violin as he watches her dance across the room.

The second stanza makes mention of a book and a cross, though there does not seem to be any connection with the first stanza. It is possible, however, that it refers to a scrapbook or other memento of their brief love affair.
