One of my relatives invented the sensory deprivation tank. Appropriately, most of my family has never seen or heard of him.

About This Quote

The sensory deprivation tank (S.D.T.) is an isolation tank used to reduce stress and anxiety by removing the senses from the body. The S.D.T. achieves this by removing all sensory input from the subject: sight, touch, sound, and smell. The S.D.T. was invented by a man named Humphrey Osmond in the 1950's who was suffering from arthritis and wanted to find a way to relieve his pain and suffering without medication.

Osmond discovered that he experienced relief by placing himself in a large metal-lined cylindrical tank filled with water and surrounded by soundproofing material such as rubber and fiberglass without any visual or physical stimulation for three to four hours at a time. After many years of experimentation, he found that after several sessions in the S.D.T., he experienced a deep sense of relaxation and inner peace which enabled him to live a more productive life, free of pain and suffering.
