The Golem and the Jinni is a short story by Jewish-American writer H. L. Mencken. The story was first published in Harper’s Magazine in 1926, and later as a novella in the collection A Madman’s Critique (1927).

In the story, a man finds himself walking with two strangers on a New York City rooftop. The two strangers are identified as “the Golem” and “the Jinni”. The man finds that he is unable to read the thoughts of either of his companions, but finds that he can read their actions.
